Author Corner: Lee Varis
Lee Varis a Hollywood photo-illustrator, has been involved in commercial photography for three decades. His images have been featured in National Geographic, Newsweek, and Fortune magazines, and both his writing and photography have been featured in trade journals such as PDN, New Media, adn others. His pictures have appeared on movie posters, video box covers, and CD covers, and in numerous brochures and catalogues. He has been a seminar instructor with APA, PPA, Julia Dean Photographic Workshops, and Apple Computer. Lee is currently the Director of Digital Services at the Icon, a high-end digital photo lab in Los Angeles.

Where do you call home?

If you didn't work in the tech field, what would your dream job be?
If I didn't do what I'm doing now, I'd be a jazz musician recording on ECM and touring with a world fusion band.
First job after you finished school?
Black and white poster blow-up lab & technical draftsman for a safety engineering firm.
Favorite movie?
Currently, "The Lives of Others"
Any cool hobbies?
Music...I have a growing collection of world instruments, guitars, ouds, bouzouki, and drums of all sorts.
Xbox or PlayStation?
Neither. My whole life is a video game anyway. I much prefer analog activities.
Favorite sports team?
White Star — a Society for Creative Anachronism rapier fighting unit
Childhood hero?
Gandhi.
Childhood ambition or what did you want to be when you grew up?
The world's greatest movie director.
